Job Description
As Secretary Healthy Working Conditions you will, together with your colleagues, provide the secretariat for the Committee on Health and Occupational Exposure to Substances (GBBS), and its two subcommittees on the classification of carcinogenic substances or substances harmful to reproduction. These (sub)committees mainly assess the toxic properties and health effects of substances to which workers may be exposed at their workplace. This may lead to a recommendation for an advisory health value for the establishment of a workplace limit value, or a proposal for a hazard classification for substances that are carcinogenic or harmful to reproduction. You may also be deployed on other Health Council committees, whether or not in the field of working conditions.
For the (sub)committees you will perform literature research and you will prepare discussion papers and (English) draft advices. These documents are discussed during committee meetings and you take care of the reporting. You are also responsible for processing stakeholder comments on draft opinions. Together with an editor, you ensure that the summary and the press release are accessible to a wide audience. You also contribute to the recruitment of new committee members and maintain contacts with the Health Council’s scientific network and clients. You work in a small team of colleagues for each consultancy project.
Job requirements
- You have a completed university degree with a master’s or PhD in epidemiology
- Our preference is for a candidate with a registration as an epidemiologist A or B and a candidate with affinality or experience in epidemiological research on occupational exposure to chemical stoffes.
- The Health Council of the Netherlands makes science accessible to politicians and administrators. You will also be able to present scientific information in such a way that it can be used for policy development, for example by providing a clear line of argumentation.

- You have excellent writing skills in English and generally have excellent communication skills.

Other terms of employment

What is healthy food? Who should receive a particular vaccine? How dangerous are certain chemicals? Every year the Health Council of the Netherlands issues about 25 advisory reports to the government, the House of Representatives and/or the Senate, which contain the latest scientific insights on (public) health and health care. This ranges from areas such as care, prevention and nutrition to healthy living and healthy working conditions. The Health Council of the Netherlands is supported by the secretariat, which is divided into a scientific staff, a business operations department and a communication department. The secretariat employs about 50 people.
