Function
Within the Department of Primary Care Medicine we are looking for a PhD candidate ‘Prevention and early detection of cancer in people with intellectual disabilities’. Will you join our team?

The research group Medicine for people with intellectual disabilities (GMVB) cooperates with seven care organisations for people with intellectual disabilities in the form of the academic workshop Sterker op eigen Benen (Stronger on Own Legs). You will be working within a project funded by the Maarten van der Weijden Foundation: Prevention and early detection of cancer in people with intellectual disabilities.

People with intellectual disabilities have different cancer risks compared to other people. Less attention is paid to the risks of cancer, because the disability itself is often the focus of attention. Reasons for conducting precautionary cancer screening in this target group are insufficiently known. This leads to later diagnoses of cancer, fewer treatment options and more deaths from cancer than in other people. To improve this, it is necessary to know which cancer risks doctors should pay more attention to in people with intellectual disabilities and how they themselves can better decide on participation in preventive tests. Four studies are planned for this purpose:

Literature review on the relationship between specific VB syndromes and cancer risk.
Data study on participation in population screening.
Qualitative research into experiences with participation or non-participation in population screening.
Mixed-method study of knowledge and recognition of cancer risks among supervisors.

Together, these studies lead to recommendations and (information) materials about cancer prevention in people with intellectual disabilities.

As a PhD student you are responsible for the practical implementation of the research project. You are responsible for the accurate design and execution of studies and are a networker who reports on your results in international journals and at conferences. You also share your results with a wide audience. This PhD position is embedded within the research school RIHS (Radboud Institute for Health Sciences). The project will lead to a dissertation and scientific PhD.

Tasks and responsibilities

Design and execution of research based on the project description.
Collect and analyze research data, both quantitative and qualitative.
Publish in scientific journals.
Collaborating with co-researchers with intellectual disabilities and a sounding board group.
Presenting results at conferences and meetings.
Representing the Academic Workshop.

Primary Care Medicine

Profile
We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in health research and affinity with the target group, people with intellectual disabilities and/or oncology. You have experience in research writing and reporting. Furthermore, you are an independent and flexible team player with great analytical skills. You have experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods.

You have a Master’s degree in (Biomedical) Health Sciences, Medicine or Social Sciences. A research master’s degree is an advantage. You have a good command of the Dutch and English languages, both verbally and in writing. You also recognise yourself in the Radboud way of working.

The Radboudumc pays 70% of the pension premium. You pay the rest of the premium yourself via your gross salary.
