How well can high-risk groups be protected by vaccination? What is the effect of covid-19 morbidity and mortality in subpopulations in shorter and longer term? Do these topics appeal to you? Then this PhD position might be something for you.

Purpose of the function

In the Netherlands, the data-infrastructure to assess effects of COVID-19 vaccination using routine data did so far not allow to consider the effects of important co-variates such as the occurrence of natural infection and co-morbidities. An appropriate data-infrastructure for this is being developed in the CBS Remote Access environment, which should contain data on for example COVID-19 testing, infections, hospitalisation, vaccination and chronic diseases. This will allow not only the study of effects of important covariates, but also the study of vaccine effectiveness in different high risk populations such as people living in elderly care homes and those with chronic diseases. This is the first focus of this PhD proposal.

The second focus of this PhD will be to study the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on morbidity and mortality in the short, medium and long term, in different population subgroups and on the development or trajectory of different chronic diseases. This will deliver important evidence for longer impact of COVID-19 and may provide leads into prevention and control of COVID-19.

You will have an appointment within the National Immunisation Programme (RVP) department. In the proposed PhD trajectory, close collaboration will be sought with the ongoing work on the effects of COVID-19 vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as other experts in CBS and others, including academic groups.

Activities and tasks

• Expand your knowledge on measuring vaccination effectiveness and shorter and longer term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on health outcomes in different subgroups.
• Perform data cleaning and validation.
• Perform in depth epidemiological analyses on large databases.
• Publish and share results in (international) scientific publications and/or conferences.
• Work both independently, and in a team on your projects.

The ideal candidate will have:

• A strong interest in epidemiology of infectious diseases.
• Finished master degree in epidemiology, data science, statistics or another relevant degree.
• Mastered quantitative research methods and analysis techniques.
• A strong interest in delving into complex statistical analyses.
• Have a scientific mind-set and will be a team-player.
• Communicate and write scientifically in English.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden
Salarisomschrijving: het eerste jaar € 2.817,- bruto per maand (volgens schaal 8, salaristrede 0);
het tweede jaar volgens schaal 8, salaristrede 5;
het derde jaar volgens schaal 8, salaristrede 7;
het vierde jaar volgens schaal 8, salaristrede 8.
Dienstverband: Arbeidsovereenkomst voor bepaalde tijd
Contractduur: Tijdelijke vacature voor de duur van de opleiding van 48 maanden
Maximaal aantal uren per week: 36

Overige arbeidsvoorwaarden
Naast het salaris ontvang je een Individueel Keuzebudget (IKB). Het IKB bestaat uit geld (16,37% van je bruto jaarsalaris) en tijd. Met het IKB maak jij de keuzes die bij jou passen en kun je een deel van je arbeidsvoorwaarden zelf samenstellen. Je kunt er bijvoorbeeld voor kiezen om een deel van je maandinkomen te laten uitbetalen wanneer jij dat wenst. Ook kun je dit budget omzetten in verlof en andersom of besteden aan fiscaal vriendelijke doelen. De Rijksoverheid hecht sterk aan persoonlijke groei en loopbaanontwikkeling en biedt daarvoor tal van mogelijkheden. Tot de secundaire arbeidsvoorwaarden behoren onder meer verschillende studiefaciliteiten, bedrijfsfitness, volledige vergoeding van je OV-reiskosten woon-werkverkeer en gedeeltelijk betaald ouderschapsverlof.
